Writing
You provide the ideas, and I'll put
pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard).
Editing
After you've written and rewritten till you just can't
write any more, I will be that fresh perspective,
stepping into the shoes of your reader and
suggesting additions, deletions, or relocations.
Proofreading
Think of this as the polish that makes your words shine.
After all of your hard work, the last thing you want is a reader
being distracted by a typo or grammatical error.
Adoption Ghostwriting
Congratulations! You have decided to adopt. It may have been
your first choice, or like many, it may have been a decision
you came to after a long journey filled with what felt like
many detours. You have jumped through all of the hoops and
proven yourself over and over. Then when you are so close that
you can practically feel your baby in your arms, you are
basically told, "Now write a short booklet about yourself/selves
that will convince someone to give you their child." Wow!
The Adoption Profile Book.
It is often presented as a simple task--almost an afterthought--
but it can stop you in your tracks on this journey of a lifetime.
I was the only ten-year-old I knew with a real-life doll. My "Becka Boo"
is my niece, and she lived with me or next door to me for her entire
childhood. She taught me that you do not have to give birth to have
a mother's heart, and my heart has mothered her for over four decades.
In 2022, after their own long journey, Becka and her husband, Rick,
were almost ready to adopt. There was just one thing blocking the path.
"Auntie, can you help me?"
They had worked so hard and had everything in order. They were
ready for this! But there was one thing stalling their progress.
"You have to write a what?" I had never heard of an Adoption Profile Book. As soon as Becka explained, I understood. Knowing what she had gone through to get here, I could imagine how hard it would be to know what to say and how to say it--especially for someone who did not count writing among her natural talents. It is challenging to write about yourself, and even more challenging when the stakes are so high. I reviewed the content they had put together for their Profile Book, and I helped them through a combination of writing new sections, editing others, and proofreading the whole book.
I encouraged Becka to express the things that she was too scared
to say--the very things that a birth mother needed to read. The
Adoption Profile Book--that seemingly simple but deceptively
debilitating task--was much easier for her to face with a little help and
encouragement. Before we knew it, Becka and Rick were meeting
the woman who would make their dream come true. I cried
when Becka told me that this woman chose them, in part, because
of something I had suggested she include in their profile book.
Only a few months later our precious Baby Finn joined our family,
and I can't imagine life without him. He lights up our family tree!
This amazing experience is what inspired me to create a new job title:
